Edward J. Bieber, MD
Board Certified in Orthopaedic Surgery and also in Hand Surgery, Dr. Bieber is interested in all areas of orthopedics, with a special interest in reconstruction, trauma, arthroscopy, and sports medicine of the upper extremity, including the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. He has expertise in arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and shoulder replacement surgery. A graduate of Yale University and Georgetown Medical School, his orthopedic training was at Johns Hopkins University with a fellowship in hand and upper extremity at the Mayo Clinic. He is a consultant for hand and upper extremity surgery at the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Bieber has served as Chairman of the Department of Surgery and Chairman of the Medical Staff at Suburban Hospital and as President of the Washington Orthopaedic Society.

He explained the likelihood that I had torn one of the tendons around my rotator cuff and noted that many people do. Dr. Bieber and Christina did an outstanding job for me today at my appointment. I had recently went to a different orthopedist because of a injured left hand. I explained to them that I felt a I felt and heard a pop in my left hand. I was in pain for almost 30 minutes. I knew it must have been a tendon due to my previous knowledge of working with sports injuries myself. I shared with the other ortho that I believe I may need a MRI because I know I did not have any broken bones. They proceeded to do an x-ray prescribed me, pain pills, and sent me on my way. After speaking to my wife, who is an internist that owns two primary care offices in Maryland. She immediately got me an appointment for MRI which revealed I had a partial tear in my flexor tendon. Referred me to Dr. Bieber, who was able to get me the very next at 730 am. Once I got to the office, the staff was super friendly. I had a skiing accident in 1989 that shattered my humerus in my right shoulder. I lived with the consequences of that damage for 34 years. I had very limited motion until I met Dr Bieber in 2023. He did a total reverse replacement and gave me full motion back in my shoulder. It is a miracle. I can swim, throw a ball with my right hand, and do everything I used to do. My visit to Ortho-Bethesda was smooth and pleasant. I was greeted right away, my paper work filled out online. I received an X-ray that was short and quick. The time spent with me asking questions, examining the X-rays and performing analysis of my hands and thumbs was thorough with the nurse practitioner. Dr. Bieber was my father’s surgeon for a few things, including shoulder surgery, and my father absolutely loved him, and thought he was a masterful surgeon, so when I slipped on ice and it felt like my shoulder slid out of socket, I knew exactly who to call. Dr. Bieber was thorough, knowledgeable and gentle, when I was in excruciating pain. I feel very lucky I was able to see him immediately. His staff is also extremely responsive and compassionate. And he was very specific about where he wanted me to get my MRI after his staff took x-rays, so when I wasn’t able to get in initially because the MRI center was booked solid, his staff said call us back if you can’t get in and we’ll get you in. I had a skiing accident in 1989 that broke my humerus in 22 pieces and destroyed my rotator cuff. The surgeon I had at that time sutured the pieces of my bone back together, but the bone died a year later and I was diagnosed with avascular necrosis. Because the technology at the time was poor, I was told to wait as long as possible to get it replaced. I heard from several people in the Washington, DC area that Dr Bieber was the best shoulder ortho in the area. Dr Bieber had scans made of my shoulder, and a replacement for my shoulder was 3D printed in titanium. I had no pain five days after surgery, I had more mobility in my shoulder at three weeks than my original shoulder had, and at six weeks I can sleep on my new shoulder and use my arm to do a lot of things without any pain. I am still in PT, but the focus is starting to shift toward gaining strength in my new shoulder. Frankly, this is a miracle. 30 years ago Dr. Bieber handled my hip surgery necessitated by a congenital condition I struggled with since childhood. At the time, as a young woman, I had two small children and found myself completely unable to walk and in terrible pain. I had never been so afraid at the prospect of not being able to take care of my kids. To this day, the excellent work he did for me way back then has given me full mobility and more. I even had another baby a few years after the surgery, and can walk 10-15 miles per week in mountainous terrain with no pain. But that's not all. Aside from being an incredibly skilled surgeon, at the time of my surgery my family was struggling financially and we couldn't afford more than a modest payment toward the insurance co-pay. Dr. Bieber wrote off the balance as "professional courtesy". We didn't ask him to do that - he made that accounting adjustment that on his own. My wrist caused almost unbearable pain with each movement prior to the appointment. Dr. Bieber examined my wrist and its x-ray and gave me a cortisone shot (I am actually not sure of the medication) and presceibed a special brace, which was available at OrthoBethesda. I had a fall into a creek in Solomons, MD and cut my finger. We have lots of bacteria in the water here. I was given antibiotics as a precaution. It healed but about a month later my finger swelled and was very painful. I was referred to Dr. Bieber and he took me right in. Told me he suspected Mycobacterium Marnium, but the only way to diagnose it was through surgery and culture. He scheduled that immediately. He also brought in an infectious disease specialist as part of the team. The culture proved him correct and he had already started me on the correct medications and physical therapy. It is all better now. I am so grateful to Dr. Bieber for his knowledge, concern and care and for bringing in the infectious disease team. In addition to revealing the extent of my shoulder injury, the scan also revealed that I had a tumor in my right lung. Had ongoing pain in both wrists and one thumb. At Dr. Bieber's suggestion, when X-ray and MRI did not show anything, had EMG test. That revealed source of problems and allowed Dr. Bieber to prescribe an interim approach to resolve pain and discomfort to take before considering surgery. Really appreciated his approach, thoughtfulness, and broad scope of analysis. He explained everything to me. And I am feeling better halfway through the interim approach. Dr. Bieber has treated me many times as well as many members of my family. He is an excellent and careful orthopedist, and works with you to avoid surgery to the extent possible - a rare characteristic for surgeons who seem to want to immediately do surgery. That means of course that your recovery may take longer as you work with him and his superb PT team to deal with your problem. I definitely prefer that approach to the knee-jerk reaction of surgery immediately for all cases. He leaves no stone unturned to analyze your condition. In the process of evaluating my wrist pain, he diagnosed a serious non-orthopedic condition that had just developed; as a result, he caught it early and I could have that other issue treated before it developed into an even worse problem. I was highly impressed with the efficiency of this practice. Virtually no waiting time. Online registration was a breeze. Once they took me back to the exam room, I had virtually no wait for an assistant to come and take my history, then a PA to do a preliminary exam, followed then by the doctor for the full visit. Dr. Bieber replaced my right shoulder after I fell and shattered it. Before the surgery he discussed it fully. I am allergic to metal jewelry and feared putting metal in my body. We discussed this. He told me he would use a titanium implant. He also discussed and monitored my post surgery care. The surgery is a complete success and gave me full use of my shoulder and right arm. My right shoulder is free of any pain. Dr. Bieber also did carpal tunnel surgery and surgery to relieve compression of my ulna nerve.
