J. Patrick Caulfield, Physician Emeritus
A native of Chevy Chase, Dr. Caulfield graduated from Georgetown Medical School and completed an Orthopaedic Residency there in 1970. After two years as an orthopaedist in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam, he returned to Bethesda and became a founding partner of Bethesda-Chevy Chase Orthopaedic Associates, which later became OrthoBethesda. He is now an emeritus partner in the practice, which will celebrate its 50 year anniversary in 2015. Dr. Caulfield is Diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery and has been a past Member of the Board of Trustees and a founding Member of the Foundation Board at Suburban Hospital. Dr. Caulfield has been featured in every issue of Washingtonian Magazine’s “Top Doctors” for 20 consecutive years since its inception in 1991.
In 1969, Dr. Caulfield was a member of the team that performed the first total hip replacement in the Washington Metropolitan area. In 1972, he performed the first total joint replacement at Suburban Hospital and since has performed many thousands of these surgeries. He headed the team that founded the Joint Center at Suburban Hospital in 2005 and that center now is the third busiest in the State of Maryland.
