Tennis Elbow Physical Therapy
Tennis elbow is the pain you feel on the outside of your arm where your forearm connects to your elbow. It’s linked with tears in the tendons and muscles of your forearm. The tears cause inflammation and place stress on the other parts of your arm, which further causes pain when you want to grip or lift things.
This condition is caused by overuse or repetitive stress. Activities that strain the muscles around the elbow can cause tennis elbow. In tennis, if you hit the ball with a backhand, you can place stress on your muscles, which contract repeatedly as you move the racquet to hit the ball. Other activities that can cause tennis elbow include:
- Playing musical instruments
- Cutting trees
If your tennis elbow doesn’t get better with the application of ice, pain medication and rest, your doctor may recommend physical therapy. Therapy will enhance the strength of your forearm and make it more flexible. It can also help improve blood flow to tendons and increase the supply of blood and oxygen.
You may need to do exercises for up to two months for full pain relief. Some of the exercises your therapist will recommend include:
- Wrist extensor stretch
- Wrist flexor stretch
- Wrist turn
- Ball squeeze
- Finger stretch
- Forearm strengthening
Once your elbow pain has subsided completely, your therapist will tell you the best way to your keep elbow working at the optimum strength.
